    Professional History
What began 15 years ago for me as a "cool" teaching technique as developed into the primary teaching strategy in my classroom.  The service-learning milestone for me is my own understand of its power.  My students say it best:

"I think the greatest thing we have in this country is the power to change things…make things better.  Doing my senior ex and social action showed me that."

"Senior ex and social action helped to prepare me for the real world and I feel confident in who I am and where I’m going. Before this year, I’m not sure I believed that."

"This experience really opened me up as a person.  It’s helped me to think about the real world and how I am going to affect it.  It’s also shown me that working in groups is the “real world” and that I am a productive group member."
                       Quest Seniors 2007.

Through service-learning, I've realized the importance of empowering our youth, because by empowering them, we not only reach them as learners, but we allow them to grow as citizens. The true service-learning practitioner, who really knows and can employ the service-learning elements, understands why this is so important   As a long time service-learning practitioner, I have seen the power of our youth time and time again.  I am amazed at how much learning occurs when we empower and believe that students will accomplish great things.   In order to empower students, teachers have to change what goes on inside the classroom. Finally,  I understand the most significant learning can happen outside the school walls, and that our community is a true partner in that learning.

    Professional Expertise/ Passions
Because I designed a school with a service-learning focus, I am currently a service-learning practitioner, and I am our district's service-learning coordinator, I have several areas where I feel like I can be helpful.

    Program Development

Embedding Service-Learning Systemically into a District

    Grant Writing for Service-Learning

    Building Capacity

    Public Relations around Service-Learning

    Integrating Service-Learning into Curriculum

Social Action and Embedding it into Curriculum

    Service-Learning Basics

What I'm Most Excited About in My Current Work
I am most excited about the social action work I do in my 12th grade humanities classes.  It inspires me daily, and reminds me of how powerful students can be in changing the world.
